The Still Life Method:
The heightened realism of my still life paintings is reminiscent of the Dutch masters of the 16th & 17th centuries. The painstaking technique of egg tempera emulsion and oil give the paintings a stunning depth and three-dimensional quality. The process begins with a precise under painting with white egg tempera. Using small brushstrokes that follow the contour of the subject I bring definition to the form and accentuate the highlights. Transparent oil glazes, of complementary colors, are then applied to the painting. By building up many layers of these glazes over luminescent egg tempera I strive to achieve a life-like quality in these paintings.
I have been fortunate to be tutored in this method by Alex Gnidziejko, one of the foremost masters of this medium.
